Painted in 1953, the present work is one of a series that the artist created in the early 1950s featuring birds in flight. Here, two doves-- symbols of love and peace--are depicted in deep emerald green with golden collars. The birds fly against a yellow backround with a star, an oak left-shaped flower and fence posts all painted in white and enclosed within thick black outlines. This modernist and schematic treatment of an essentially natural scene embodies Léger's mature oeuvre and captures his colorful, joyful vision at this late stage in his career.
