Influenced by vernacularism, Shaker design, and 18thC English furniture design, Klint evolved as an influential design theorist, and in 1924 established the Furniture Design department at the Danish Royal Academy of Arts. Klint encouraged his students, many of whom were to become the leading furniture designers of the 1940s and 1950s, to analyse the relationships between rational and traditional form, natural materials, and the qualities of traditional craftsmanship. Klint's own designs, handmade in limited quantities or to order during the 1930s by the skilled cabinetmaker Rud. Rasmussen, articulated an explicit comprehension of 18th Century English models, and laid the foundations for the renewal of Danish design after the Second World War.
