Lot Essay

Murray Bail has referred to the years spanning 1953-57 as a period of consolidation for Fairweather's art. In 1953, after years spent travelling, an element of stability entered the artist's life when he finally settled in a thatched hut that he built himself on Queensland's Bribie Island. From this haven, and with the support of Sydney's Macquarie Galleries, Fairweather embarked on a period of immense creative productivity. Fairweather's abstract works always retained a figurative element and in this work the warrior holding his spear may be clearly identified.

We are grateful to Murray Bail for his assistance with this catalogue entry.
