Lot Essay

Nolan first began painting the bayside Melbourne suburb of St Kilda while enlisted in the army. The St Kilda paintings from this immediate post-war period all have a deliberate child-like quality of both subject matter and style, that reveals a longing for the innocent pastimes and pleasures of youth.
