Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mrs. C. Wansink for the attribution, given on the basis of a photograph. This picture can be dated to circa 1826 on the basis of comparison with the picture signed and dated 1826 that was with Douwes, Amsterdam, in 1984 (photograph recorded in the RKD). In the latter painting a similar interior with a checkered tile floor is depicted with an open doorway on the left. The treatment of the faces and the costumes of the figures strongly recall those in the present picture.
