Lot Essay

The attribution was first suggested by Dr. Sam Segal, who compares the present picture with similar large kitchen pieces by Van Winghen: for example, that, signed and dated 1613, in the Historisches Museum, Frankfurt, and another, signed and dated 1615, in a private collection (see C. Grimm, Stilleben. Die Niederländischen und Deutschen Meister, Stuttgart, 1988, p. 201, fig. 201). Mr. F. Meijer of the RKD does not support the attribution to Van Winghen.
