In her catalogue raisonné, Mrs. Donahue Kuretsky includes the present lot under "Paintings of Disputed Attribution". While she notes that the pose of the officer recalls that in Ochtervelt's painting of circa 1675 in a private collection, England (op. cit., no. 85, fig. 99), she expresses doubts about Ochtervelt's authorship on the basis of the unusual facial types, the lighting and the furnishing of the interior.
