Lot Essay

The flags on the shipping indicate some connection with the Prince of Orange, possibly Stadtholder-King Willem III (1650-1702). The large man-o'-war in the centre has a so-called dubbele Prinsenvlag (double Prince-flag) in its voorstag.

We are grateful to S. Giepmans and C. Wansink of the RKD for the tentative attribution, given on the basis of a photograph.
