A MESSAPIAN PAINTED KALATHOS
SECOND HALF OF 4TH CENTURY B.C.
The flaring bowl decorated with applied buff painted friezes of laurel wreath around the rim interior, wavy leafy tendrils on the exterior rim, and body friezes of palmettes and leaves alternating with birds and animals on the upper body, palmettes with scrolling tendrils alternating with leaves around the middle and five ivy leaves above the base; and a South Italian red-figure pelike, one side with a griffin and bust of an Arimasp, the reverse side with two facing youths closely wrapped in himations, 4th Century B.C.
