AN OLD BABYLONIAN HAEMATITE CYLINDER SEAL
CIRCA 1900-1700 B.C.
Showing the sun god, Shamash, holding up a saw-toothed knife and with one foot resting on the back of a recumbent human-headed bull wearing horned headdress, approaching him are a worshipper with one hand raised, a priest holding a situla and sprinkler, followed by a Lamma goddess with both hands raised in supplication, a solar-crescent above, 13/16 in. (2.1 cm.) high; another, haematite, with a standing water god with flowing vase, in front is another deity with one hand raised, followed by a male worshipper, a crescent above, the terminal with two bow-legged dwarves, 5/8 in. (1.6 cm.) high; another haematite cylinder seal with a standing deity with one foot raised, being approached by a suppliant goddess, a male worshipper and a priest holding a sprinkler, a Babylonian cuneiform inscription reads "Shamash", probably a trial piece, 1 in. (2.4 cm.) high, both circa 1900-1600 B.C.; and a West Persian(?) chalcedony cylinder seal with a tree flanked by two rearing horned animals, probably circa 800-700 B.C., 1 1/16 in. (2.7 cm.) high (4)
