Lot Essay

The serpentined and scrolling frame, conceived in the George II French 'picturesque' manner, is closely related to a drawing by the pre-eminent cabinet-maker and designer John Linnell dated 1755 (illustrated in H. Hayward, 'The Drawings of John Linnell in the Victoria and Albert Museum', Furniture History, 1969, vol. V, fig. 46 and reproduced here). A related pair of mirrors more broadly proportioned and with basket crests was executed by Linnell for Sir Monoux Cope for Bramshill, Hampshire, circa 1755-60 (illustrated in H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, vol. II, 1980, p. 98, pl. 18). Another related mirror attributed to Linnell was sold in these Rooms, 19-20 January 1996, lot 457.
