Lot Essay

Probably designed for Tiffany's display at the 1939 New York World's Fair, this demitasse service embodies the sleek new International style, which was in stark contrast to the Colonial Revival style popular during the 1920's and 1930's. Drawing inspiration from the modern ocean liners and soaring skyscrapers of the 1930s, Tiffany began production of silver in the modern taste in preparation for the World's Fair and for Tiffany's centennial in 1937.
