Gorham designers acquired Japanese wood-blook prints in the late 1860s and began to produce works taking inspiration from their designs. In the continual race to devise new forms and styles of silverware, Gorham silversmiths are acknowledged as having taken an early lead over Tiffany & Co., in being the first to draw inspiration from the works of Japan. Please refer to Charles H. Carpenter, Jr., Gorham Silver, 1982, pp. 95 for examples and a list of Japanese design sources in Gorham's library.
