Lot Essay

The horloger Grandvoinnet is recorded at this address between 1806-20.

With its distinctive use of miniature furniture of advanced Neo-classical design, allied with mythological subject manner, this clock relates to the oeuvre of the bronzier Savart. A design for a related clock in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris is inscribed Mr. Savart fabrique de bronze rue plelipaux no.11 (illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, 5.15.12, p.377). Variants of the basic Savart pattern - of very similar design to this clock - are in the British Embassy, Paris and illustrated in op. cit., 5.15.13.
