This table with its almost lifelike charachter, rocaille carving, elongated cabriole legs and pronounced curved feet is typical of Portuguese salon furniture in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. A closely related table is illustrated in J. A. Levinson, ed. The Age of the Baroque in Portugal, 1993, p. 198, as well as a pair of tables illustrated in M.J. Espirito Santo Bustorff Silva and M.N. Teague, Ricardo do Espirito Santo Silva Foundation, Lison 1995, p. 76.
A 19th Century table of this style was recently sold anonymously at Christie's London, 15 November 2001, lot 100 (£ 9400).
