A PAIR OF DUTCH DELFT VASES AND COVERS OVER-DECORATED IN IMITATION OF RED JAPANESE LACQUER
Late 18th/Early 19th century, blue leaf mark, the over decoration probably executed in Berlin and in the manner of Martin Schnell
Each of faceted bulbous form, the lids surmounted by a foo dog and decorated with trellis-filled cartouches, the bodies with similar cartouches enclosing scenes depicting figures near buildings with floral sprigs and birds of paradise between the reserves

A similarly decorated blue lacquered pair of earthenware vases were sold Anonymously, Sotheby's London, 15 December 1999, lot 72.

Martin Schnell, who had worked under the renown lacquer artist Gerard Dagly in Berlin, was appointed by Augustus the Strong (d. 1733), Elector of Saxony as court 'lacquer-master' in 1710, establishing a workshop that provided decoration for furniture as well as Meissen porcelain.
