These bergères, with their finely carved laurel-leaf crest rail, scrolled arm terminals and beaded seat rail, are a sophisticated example of Northern neoclassic furniture, both in design and execution. The carving of the legs, in particular, with their bulging, reeded capitals are close to many Swedish chairs of the period. They still retain much of their original gilded and painted surface decoration and probably even the original stuffing and scrim of one. In addition, they also bear a late-18th century inventory label which, while it could not yet be identified, may lead to further evidence of a Russian provenance.
