Lot Essay

Superb design, with a sunflower beneath the finial across which the stems forming the eight-petal flower cross. Looking down on it there is a wonderful interplay between these garlands forming the petals of a circular flower and those on the oval stand forming an oblong octagon. This interplay of form with decoration - the harmony between the round ecuelle, the domed cover, and curved oval stand with the positioning of the painted frise colorée panels, sunflowers and garlands - and the high quality of its execution is a perfect example of the artistic synergy that made France the arbiter of style and taste in the decorative arts during the second half of the 18th century.
