Blue interlaced L's enclosing date letters ii for 1786, painter's mark for Mme. Le Bel and incised 24 to one; purple interlaced L's enclosing date letter LL for 1788, painter's mark possibly for Mlle. Reselle, and incised 34 to the other
Each painted with a tight bouquet of cornflowers, violets and other flowers within a gilt-edged lavender blue medallion gilt with stylized lyres, the border with single sprays of each single flower beneath a similar lavender blue band, the cavetto edged in gilt
9½in. (24.2cm.) diam. (2)

Probably bought from the factory either by the Swiss-Italian banker Piccaluga or by the marquis de Nielle (de Niesles)

Lot Essay

A large part of this service, exhibited at the Biennale de Paris of 1992 was illustrated in L'Estampille-Objet d'Art, October 1992, no. 262, p. 20. A pair of bottle coolers and seven soup plates, the property of a Lady and a Gentleman respectively, were sold Sotheby's, New York, 5 November 1998, lots 113 and 114. A single plate from the service from the collection of Charles-Otto Zieseniss was sold Christie's Paris, 6 December 2001, lot 240.
