Lot Essay

Although the vase 'Pompadour' was made in four sizes after a design by Jean-Claude Duplessis, père, only the two smaller sizes were made at Sèvres without a pierced shoulder for pot pourri.

See Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, vol. I, pp. 127-135 for a detailed discussion of the model and known variations in its design.
