Lot Essay

The present small panels are perhaps templates for the decoration found at Mintons on the border of plates. See Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, The Art of Ceramic Relief Decoration, 1849-1992, p. 148, fig. 113 for a bone china plate with identical parian panels by Albion Birks; and see David Battie, Guide to Understanding 19th & 20th century British Porcelain, Suffolk, p. 165 for a variant example also incorporating these panels.
