Lot Essay

The present model is based on an engraving after Angelica Kauffmann. The porcelain version produced at Derby has traditionally been attributed to Pierre Stephan. However, according to Siegfried Ducret in Zurcher Porzellan, p. 25, Jean-Jacques Spendler modeled a similar group entitled Schlafender Amor for the Zurich factory in 1775. See John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain, London, 1980, fig. 144, p. 75, no. 195 for a another Derby example in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum and a discussion of the attribution; also Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848, London,
