Lot Essay

The programme is unusual (apart from its two-per-turn arrangement on a standard diameter cylinder) in concentrating on one opera, playing on the first and last revolutions and the second half of the penultimate revolution. There is no stop position on the great wheel between the two tunes in each revolution, although nos. seven and eight are the only two forming a single tune without an appreciable break in the pinning. The 'Quatre Airs', heading is, therefore, more than a simple error: the movement is, mechanically speaking, four-air.
