Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé. Château-bottled
Offered with original capsules, corks and labels
Slightly corroded and damaged capsules. Bin-soiled and slightly stained labels. One bottle without label, vintage on cork. Three bottles with slightly torn labels. Nine bottles with slip labels. "F. Woltner Paris". Levels: four bottles base of neck, one very top-shoulder, two top-shoulder, four upper/top-shoulder and one upper-shoulder. Amber colour
Tasting note: Unquestionably the greatest Yquem of the 20th Century. An unusually hot summer and early autumn which made it difficult for the red Bordeaux but perfect for Sauternes. I am almost ashamed to confess how many times I have tasted this wine. Often and alarming deep amber colour (as is the 1929 and 1937) but enormously rich, sweet, fleshy and fat - yet with an extraordinary delicate orange-blossom flavour. Great length and superb aftertaste. Last noted in September 1998. M.B.
