Lot Essay

The statue in the foreground is of Sir Robert Peele. Barton has painted the flower girls who used to congregate there.

A similar watercolour is illustrated in G.E. Mitton, The Scenery of London, London, 1905, illustrated in colour facing p. 44. This watercolour is entitled Cheapside and has a subtitle that reads: 'nearly opposite Bow Church, in the distance is the corner of Wood Street the scene of Wordsworth's 'Reverie of Poor Susie'.
