After they married in 1904, the de Glehns bought 73 Cheyne Walk, an art nouveau house overlooking the Thames at Chelsea. The present view, painted from the artist's bedroom looks west over Battersea Bridge towards Lots Road Power Station which had just been built. Whistler, who died at 74 Cheyne Walk, had immortalised this stretch of river, indeed it was known locally at that time as Whistler's Reach.

The building of London's great power stations provoked strong reactions but their distinictive outlines have become as much a part of the London sky-line as any other historic building. The Lots Road and Battersea Power Stations are now seen as important London landmarks.
