with engraved head and flight joined by a locking chain and drop, Exeter hallmarks for 1847, also marked Combmartin silver, Regd. Octr. 21, 1847, H.S.Ellis, Exeter.

Lot Essay

Refer Jewellery 1789-1910 by Shirley Bury page 365. Henry Ellis & Son registered a safety fastening in the form of a sheathed pin under the Utility Design section of the Designs Act. Five specimens were purchased by Queen Victoria as gifts for twenty-eight pounds ten shillings in 1848. The silver from Coombe Martin mine was a by-product of tin refining.
