SIBELIUS DISCUSSES THE INTRICACIES OF "THE TEMPEST"

An interesting letter in which the composer describes his incidental music for The Tempest "made to J. Poudens[?]'s mis-en-scène." It appears to have gone through various phases in composition, as Sibelius observes that "in the suites, I have brought together many things from different sources and reworked them or omitted things." He lists the material for the suites in detail, giving the original places of each item in the play with specific act and scene numbers.

Sibelius composed The Tempest for a production of Shakespeare's play at Copenhagen in 1926. Robert Layton describes it as "[Sibelius's] last and greatest music in this genre. No other twentieth-century composer working in this field has surpassed his achievement" (Sibelius, London, 1978, 99 and 102).
