A QUOTATION FROM "TILL EULENSPIEGEL". Strauss quotes the first two bars of the third theme from his popular orchestral tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel lustige Streiche, Op.28 (1894-95). During this period, Strauss was guest condoctor with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra during the 1894-5 season, and thereafter broadened his conducting engagements to other countries, including Russia. His tone poems, such as Eulenspiegel, Also sprach Zarathustra, Don Quixote and Ein Heldenleben, remain among his most popular and influential works.
