FIRST EDITION of Jacquemont's record of his voyage to India. Jacquemont was one of the rising stars of French natural history, combining youth, genius and a rhapsodic love for nature. His continual exertions under difficult conditions led to an early death in the Himalayas. The present work collects his writings and researches made on his extended travels through India. Three volumes of Jacquemont's personal observations are supplemented by a volume of scientific descriptions by leading naturalists. M.I Geoffrey Saint-Hillaire described the mammals; M. Milne Edwards the crustaceans; M.E. Blanchard the insects; and A.J. Cambessedes and A.J. Decaisne the plants. In the first atlas volume are four folding maps with geographical and anthropological plates. The second atlas, a companion to volume 4, depicts India's wildlife. Jacquemont's work is rare, H. Bradley Martin's being the last sold at auction according to American Book Prices Current (Sotheby's New York, 12 December 1989, lot 1623). BM (NH) 2:604; Nissen BBI 966. (6)
