WEBSTER, John (1610-1682). The displaying of supposed witchcraft. London: J.M., 1677.

2o (295 x 186 mm). (Hole on A4 with loss of a few letters, tear on Aa2.) Contemporary blind-ruled speckled calf, red morocco lettering-piece (some wear, repairs to rear cover). Provenance: Stoughton R. Vogel (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Webster argued with those of his contemporaries who sought scientific and philosophical support for belief in witchcraft. He did not deny altogether the existence of the supernatural, but attacked the more extravagant reports of the powers of witches and "the truth of apparitions, the nature of astral and sidereal spirits, the force of charms and philters ... [and] other abstruse matters". NLM/Krivatsy 12612; Norman 2191; Wing W-1230.
