POE, Edgar Allan. "The Raven" in The American Review: A Whig Journal of Politics, Literature, Art and Science, No. II. New York: Wiley and Putnam, February 1845.
8o. Original printed wrappers (repairs to spine, inner hinges reinforced, few chips at edges); cloth folding case. Provenance: W.H. Toby (signature on cover).
FIRST APPEARANCE OF POE'S "RAVEN." The first appearance of "The Raven" is something of a bibliographical dispute. Heartman and Canny consider this presentation to be the first printing, maintaining that the 29 January 1845 appearance in The Evening Mirror is not the first appearance. Since The American Review announced that "No. II will bear date Feb. 1845, but will be issued early in January," the contention is that unless the publisher's were unable to issue the work by the date promised, then this clearly predates the late January appearance in The Evening Mirror.
