Joseph II, son of Francis I and Maria Theresa (see following lots) was elected King of the Romans in 1764 and after his father's death in 1765, Emperor of Germany. Until his mother's death in 1780 his power was limited. He declared himself independent of the Pope and suppressed 700 convents and reduced the number of clergy from 63,000 to 27,000. He also abolished serfdom, reorganized taxation and curtailed the feudal privileges of the nobles.
