Lot Essay

The exorbitant price of 35 louis d'or - Dumont charged 10 louis d'or to Queen Marie-Antoinette for the miniature of the Dauphin on 10 January 1790 - can easily be explained by the scenic background and the rather complex composition of this double-portrait. The presence of hands was a further costly factor.
This highly attractive miniature will be included in B. Hofstetter's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of François Dumont's works.
