Lot Essay

Clemens Wenceslas, thirteenth child of Elector Frederick Augustus II of Saxony. He became Elector and Archbishop of Trier, Prince Elector of Augsburg and Prince-Propst of Ellwangen. Due to the French Revolution, he was depossessed of his Trier Electorate and emigrated to Bavaria. There he was well received by his nephew King Maximilian I Joseph who granted him a pension and a life guard. Despite the French invasion, Clemens Wenceslas was a great admirer of Emperor Napoleon.
In 1784, aged seventeen Noortwyck was appointed Cabinets-Miniaturmaler to Clemens Wenceslas.
