Lot Essay

The combination of Danish and Hessian Orders worn by the sitter may be explained by the strong diplomatic relations between Denmark and Hesse-Cassel at the early 19th century. Marie, wife of King Frederick VI (see lot 103), was the eldest daughter of the Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel.
