Lot Essay

Louis Pereira, Freiherr von Arnstein belonged to a powerful sephardic jewish family of financeers installed in Vienna. The present miniature is one of the two copies made for the sitter's sons by Peter after Daffinger's oil on copper miniature formerly in the collection of Alfons Pereira, Vienna. The other copy by Peter, of rectangular shape, was sold Sotheby's, Zurich, 15 November 1977, lot 100, as part of a travelling wallet also comprising miniatures of the sitter's brothers Henry and Augustus.
