AN EMPIRE PARCEL-ENAMELLED GOLD PRESENTATION SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A MINIATURE
by Léger-Fortuné-Alexandre Ricart (fl. 1808-1818), marked, with the Parisian post-Revolutionary unofficial third standard mark for 18-carat gold, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold, the miniature by Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855), circa 1810
Rectangular box with rounded corners, the cover centred by a glazed oval miniature depicting Joachim Murat (1767-1815), King of Naples 1808-1815, facing right with flowing forward-combed curly dark hair and furry sidewhiskers, wearing the gold-embroidered blue grand costume of a Marshal of the Empire, decorated with the red sash, gold chain and silver breast-star of the Imperial French Order of the Legion of Honour, grey sky background, within a gold border stamped with stylized acanthus on a rectangular frosted gold panel stamped with four scrolling foliate spandrels in the corners, within a convex broad blue enamelled border with gold taille d'épargne scrolling foliage and vine, the base identically framed, the panels on the sides engine-turned with narrow wavy reeding and framed by narrow blue enamel bands, the base centred by a rectangular gold panel engine-turned with a pattern of small concentric discs, the rounded corners with taille d'épargne gold quatrefoils and leaves on blue enamelled rectangles
