A MEXICAN FOUR-COLOUR GOLD CHEEROT CASE
by Martinez, marked, Mexico City, circa 1815, struck with the marks of the chief assayer Antonio Forcada y la Plaza 1791-1818 and with the Mexico City hallmark and the taxmark, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold
Rectangular upright box of oblong section, the domed cover centred by a bouquet of flowers chased in four-colour gold on a matted roundel flanked by two roses on a structured ground, the front and rear sides decorated with polished strapwork on a structured ground and centred by oval medallions chased with a lady and a gentleman at an altar of love, within polished borders, the sides chased with garlands, flowersprays and rosettes, the frosted gold mounts chased with leaves and flowers, the base chased with a four-colour gold flowerspray on a matted ground, diamond-set pushpiece
