The passion and subsequent cult of custom conversions began in the States among the talented restoration shops in Southern California in the mid 1960s. Usually using no more than stock models, the cars were often transformed from every day means of transport into wild creations. Lowered, widened, chopped, souped up, whatever the imagination could dream up was attempted. Wild and wacky color schemes with equally wild interior trim was the order of the day mated to body styles that were ground hugging. One of the popular cars that lent itself so well to the custom movement was the VW Beetle. The Beetle was affordable in the first place, parts were plentiful and cheap plus the rear engine layout allowed the customizer plenty of scope to alter the engine specification and bodywork.
This is one such custom version that has been uprated by the fitting of a Porsche 914 motor and drivetrain. The Vee-Dub was professionally converted by MK Performance in Germany and has been featured in several German publications. Special features include the fully operational canvas soft top, Porsche interior, instruments and wheels and lowered suspension. With uprated Koni shock absorbers, the car drives like a performance car with the comfort of a Beetle.
With Porsche-like performance this spectacular creation will no doubt impress the neighbors!
