1960 FORD THUNDERBIRD CONVERTIBLE
Chassis No. 0Y73J162501
Black with black interior
Engine: V8, 430ci., 350hp at 4,400rpm; Gearbox: Cruise-O-Matic; Suspension: independent front, solid rear axle; Brakes: four wheel power assist drums. Left hand drive.
The classic Thunderbird was introduced in 1955 and was Ford's response to the Chevrolet Corvette that appeared in 1953. Although it had the same wheelbase (102 in.) as its rival, the Thunderbird was designed to be more comfortable and luxurious than GM's Corvette. Ford knew that the two-seater V8 was going to attract a wider audience than the Corvette's racing/performance oriented market. The Thunderbird design incorporated Ford features found on other models to create a product recognition with the hope of encouraging sales of other Ford cars as well. The 1958 - 60 models added not only more chrome, but two extra seats as well.
The car on offer here is one of the rare 'J' code cars of which only 250 were built in 1960 featuring a 430ci. 350hp Lincoln engine which was a $177 option when new. Further features include automatic (Cruise-O-Matic) transmission, tinted power windows, power seats and air conditioning. Presented in show condition following a three-year ground up restoration to the highest possible standard, this car is a multiple first place winner, including Best of Show at the VTCI regional in San Diego and the Knott's Berry Farm all Ford Show.
The attention to detail in the restoration was superb, right down to the correct under-hood engine bay decals. This model was the top of the range Ford in 1960 and in our opinion this example is difficult to fault.
