1971 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SE 3.5 LITRE CONVERTIBLE
Chassis No. 111027-12-002880
Green with cognac leather interior
Engine: V8, single overhead camshaft, 3,499cc., 230bhp at 6,000rpm; Gearbox: automatic; Suspension: independent with coil springs, wishbones and anti-roll bar all round; Brakes: disc all round, servo-assisted. Left hand drive.
The 280SE 3.5 litre Convertible is one of the rarest, most sought after and collectible of all V8 Mercedes. Only 1,232 genuine convertibles were produced between 1969 and 1971. Since then many of the less desirable coupes have been 'cut' and converted. When the 280SE 3.5 was produced it was by no means inexpensive with a price tag of approximately $14,000 in 1970. Standard equipment included leather interior, rosewood fascia, air conditioning, radio and automatic transmission. The relatively high price, however, was reflective of the quality and expense taken in producing the car. For example, all the trim was chrome covered brass and the rosewood interiors were carefully matched and fitted with hundreds of tiny screws. The very efficient Daimler-Benz factory was able to produce only 13 per week!
This superbly presented car has been repainted by Hatch and Sons Automotive, and the bodywork is described as being in excellent condition. A full mechanical service has also recently been carried out by Hatch and Sons, and new tires and a new canvas top have been fitted. The car runs well and is showing 73,790 miles on the odometer. The interior is original and in good condition. Special equipment includes an AM/FM stereo and automatic transmission. The V8 engined Mercedes convertibles are considerably more desirable than the six cylinder versions, and we are pleased to recommend this example.
