LAUWERIKS AND THE HAGENER SILBERSCHMIEDE The cooperation between the metalworker Frans Zwollo sr and the designer J.L.M. Lauweriks, both wellknown Dutch artists, started around 1900. Lauweriks and the architect K.P.C. de Bazel, his associate, contacted Zwollo to produce the metal lockplates, shades etc. for furniture they designed around the beginning of the 20th century. From 1910 to 1914 Zwollo cooperated with Lauweriks in a German silversmithy in Hagen. Originally they were recruited to teach at the Königlich Preussisches Handfertigkeitsseminar by Karl Ernst Osthaus, an influential man in the cultural and political field and founder of the Folkwangmuseum in Hagen. It was there that they founded the so called Hagener Silberschmiede, under the artistical supervision of Lauweriks and the technical direction of Zwollo. The silversmithy's aim was to produce well designed silver objects that could measure up to the Wiener Werkstätte objects. Designs of Lauweriks and Zwollo were shown next to designs of Georg Jensen, Emil Lettré and Henry van de Velde in the exhibition Metallarbeiten, organised by Osthaus for the Deutsches Museum für Kunst in Handel und Gewerbe, travelling through Germany and Austria from 1911-1914. Silver from Lauweriks and Zwollo was included in the Ghent World Exhibition of 1913. The following two lotnumbers originate from family of the founder of the Hagener Silberschmiede.
