In the 1890's many artists from the San Francisco Bay area were influenced by the subdued light of the region and intrigued by the soft color values that the light produced. A tonalist aesthetic was the artistic result. Percy Gray, one of the most important artists to come from this movement, was a prolific watercolorist and a master at capturing the cool, foggy atmosphere of the Northern Coast. Spending most of his life in the communities of San Francisco and Monterey, Gray produced many paintings depicting views of coastal coves, eucalyptus groves, mountain views and flowering fields. In Eucalyptus Grove, Morning, Gray creates a poetic composition, implementing a cool palette with soft values to accentuate the atmosphere and produce a quiet and peaceful landscape.
