Lot Essay

This is a typically Dutch chair. It does not borrow inspiration from
English or French chairs as was often the case during this period. This design heralds the end of the Rococo in Holland. Although it still
retains organic and curvacious lines, these are strongly simplified and sparingly decorated with carved ornament.
For a related chair please see the catalogue of the exhibition Rococo in Nederland, Dr. R. Baarsen et al, Amsterdam 2001, cat. no. 169.
