AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER
Attributed to the Baltimore Painter
Circa 330-320 B.C.
The obverse with a departure scene in added white within an ionic naiskos, with a woman to the left seated on a stool, her feet on a foot-rest, wearing a chiton and a red-edged himation, holding a fan in her left hand and clasping the hand of the bearded warrior who stands before her clad in a cuirass and a crested Corinthian helmet, a spear in his left hand, his horse behind him with its head turned back, an alabastron and a grieve hanging above, a situla on the plinth to the left, with four draped female gift-bearers around the naiskos, the neck with a winged Eros in added white seated on a flower amidst florals populated with birds, the volutes with white-faced female heads; the reverse with a seated youth within an ionic naiskos, holding a phiale and a spear, a shield behind him, a wreath before him, with four draped female gift-bearers around the naiskos, the neck with a profile head amidst palmettes (by the Stoke-on-Trent Painter), the volutes with female heads with black-dotted diadems; a band of dotted egg at the rim, a band of wave on the underside of the rim above bands of bead-and-reel and rosettes on the obverse, dots and laurel with a central rosette on the reverse, the shoulder with tongues above dotted ovolo, a band of meander below the scenes, palmette complexes below the handles, molded swan heads on either side of the handles
