A GREEK MARBLE STELE
Hellenistic Period, Circa Early 3rd Century B.C.
The rectangular shaft crowned with a pediment carrying acroteria, the upper portion with a recessed panel finely sculpted in relief with a woman to the right, seated on a diphros (stool) topped with a cushion, her feet resting on a foot-stool, wearing a chiton and a himation that drapes over her left shoulder and around her legs, her hair arranged in a melon coiffure, her left hand resting on her lap, holding a scroll, her right hand extending towards a young girl who stands before her, clad in a chiton, wearing her hair short, clutching a palette in her hands, inscribed above for Diodoros and Phillipa, preserving extensive traces of red pigment on the pediment, the inscription and the furniture, and traces of a painted egg-and-dart molding on the cornice
