A PALMYRENE LIMESTONE FUNERARY RELIEF
Circa 1st Century A.D.
Preserving a rectangular frame with concentric moldings, the panel with a ten-line Palmyrene Aramaic inscription recording the dedication and renovation of a family tomb, reading, "In the month of Ab, year 354 [=43 A.D.]. This is the tomb that Zabdibol the elder, son of Ogelu, ASGD/RT, who is from the Ogarudites, built for himself and for his children in their honor, forever. And from the upper separation(?) which is upon(?), from the lower(?) addition and upwards. Taymartzu and Athe'aqab, sons of this very Zabdibol renovated and built from their purses for themselves and for Maliku their elder brother and for their children in their honor this new eternal home in the year 394 [=83 A.D.]," a stylized ivy leaf flanks the last line of text
