A MESOPOTAMIAN POTTERY INCANTANTION BOWL
Circa 7th Century A.D.
The deep conical bowl with everted rim and flat base, inscribed in Judeo-Aramaic with a six-line spiral incantation around a central figure of a bound demoness, the inscription intended to protect the owner from demons and magic, reading, "Sealed and counter-sealed are the house and dwelling of A'say son of Imai...Haphael Hltiel A'rmiel and S'shtiel remove...the house and dwelling of A'say son of Imae. May he be protected from a distressful magic rite, from a demon and Lilith...and from...an idol that calls out...all demons...to all pains, impure thoughts, to all liliths. May you be shook and taken out and made to flee...from the house and dwelling and from the gates of A'say son of Imai...for all...impure thoughts, to all liliths. May you be shook and taken out and made to flee from the house and dwelling of A'say son of Imai. Amen amen selah."
