Maze, French by birth, enjoyed painting typically English scenes, 'The river life fascinated me - the docks, the parks, the Guards and then Henley in the summer, followed by racing at Goodwood and then sailing at Cowes. There was plenty to paint and I decidedly went for all these manifestations of traditional English life. There was one difficulty though - one had to have a permit to paint in most places, but people were helpful on the whole' (see W.
